Holmesdale Community Infant School

Children are at the heart of all that we do; working together to be the best that we can be’

At Holmesdale we follow a school developed systematic synthetic phonics scheme which follows the DFE’s Letters and sounds programme.

In Nursery we start by supporting children to listen to sounds and understand what they are and how they are different. We look at sounds in the environment, those made with musical instruments and support children to verbally recognise rhyme. We play games to support this development.

In Reception the children will start to learn the Phase 2 sounds in the Autumn term and they will strategically build upon this knowledge to blend for reading and segment for spelling. Throughout the year they will learn Phase 2, Phase 3 and Phase 4 phonics.

In Year 1 we continue the phonics journey with the children by consolidating their learning of Phase 3 and Phase 4 phonics. Then within the Autumn term we begin to move onto phase 5 phonics, which includes learning a range of alternatives sounds that are used in certain words, split digraphs and new tricky words.

In Year 2 we embed the knowledge that we have learnt so far and then move forward in our journey to focus on the spelling curriculum.  This includes learning further alternative spellings including silent letters, and other spelling rules for adding suffixes e.g. –ing, ed. We use spellingsplay to support our teaching within this area.
