Curriculum

At Holmesdale Infant School and Nursery, our curriculum is designed to spark curiosity, inspire imagination and build strong foundations for lifelong learning.

We want every child to leave us as a happy, confident learner, equipped with the knowledge, skills and learning behaviours needed to thrive both now and in the future.

We offer a balanced, inclusive and ambitious curriculum that ensures children achieve mastery of core skills, particularly in reading, writing and mathematics, while developing a broad understanding of the world around them. Our curriculum is enriched with purposeful experiences that celebrate creativity, encourage independence and promote a love of learning.

Guided by the PACE Framework, learning is thoughtfully sequenced, responsive to children’s needs, and underpinned by high-quality teaching. We believe in high expectations for all, ensuring every child can succeed, regardless of their starting point.

At the heart of our curriculum are our Learning Behaviours, which are explicitly taught, modelled and celebrated across the school. These behaviours empower children to become lifelong learners, able to adapt, problem-solve and take responsibility for their learning journey.

We are committed to:

  • Inspiring learning experiences that spark imagination and creativity.
  • Ensuring core knowledge and skills are embedded through high-quality teaching.
  • Cultivating a safe, nurturing environment where children feel a strong sense of belonging.
  • Promoting inclusivity and equity, so all children see themselves represented in both the school and in the wider community.
  • Fostering a culture of kindness, respect, and high expectations for all.

Through this approach, we nurture children to become thinkers, creators, and future makers. Curious minds ready to embrace challenges, shape their world, and make a difference.

A time capsule was buried in spring 2021 with children’s artwork and memories from 2020 to 2021, to be reopened in 2041.

A collage of classroom workshop activities. The top-left image shows children gathered around a table preparing food with small bowls of ingredients. The top-right image shows children participating in a “Year 1’s Castle workshop,” where an adult dressed in historical costume demonstrates behind a fabric screen. The bottom-left image shows a group of children dressed as nurses holding lanterns for “Year 2’s Florence Nightingale workshop.” The bottom-right image shows children lying on the floor as part of a workshop activity, with one child dressed in a historical-style nurse outfit.

We have a full programme of enrichment activities within each topic, including visitors, workshops, and local trips, using Reigate’s rich history to bring learning to life.

A collage of outdoor school activities. Children explore a garden area with nets; a small arch-shaped structure made from sticks and leaves is arranged on the ground; children lift a small log in a woodland learning space to look underneath; and children take part in sports activities on a playground, throwing a bean bag toward coloured cones and jumping.

We make full use of our indoor and outdoor learning spaces at Holmesdale, with regular visits to the pond, woodland, and astro area to support learning, physical development, and outdoor learning in all weathers.

The image displays a set of illustrated “Learning Behaviours,” each represented by a different cartoon animal. A turtle represents “Persevering,” a chameleon represents “Resourceful,” and an owl represents “Reflective.” An ant illustrates “Problem Solving,” a penguin and chick stand together under “Responsible,” and a smiling whale jumping from the water represents “Playing and Exploring.”

We aim to build a supportive community that helps children become independent, happy, and confident learners through core learning behaviours and values embedded across the curriculum.
