Art

“Every child is an artist; the problem is staying an artist when you grow up.”

Pablo Picasso

At Holmesdale we believe that Art should be a stimulating, enjoyable and inclusive experience for all children throughout the school.  We want our children to have the confidence and freedom to experiment with their own ideas, through different mediums.  All children should leave our school with a set of skills in drawing and painting, sculpture, textiles, printmaking, and appreciation of work from a range of artists.  They should also know how art reflects and shapes our history and the contribution it makes to our society.

Art at Holmesdale

As a staff, we agree that when planning or delivering art lessons, we will ensure

  • A clear learning intention that is both achievable and yet challenging based on teaching the skills associated with drawing, painting, textiles, printing, moulding or mixed media.
  • Give children the confidence to express themselves, be creative and become proficient in art techniques and skills.
  • Develop appreciation and enjoyment of the visual arts and fire their imagination as a fundamental means of personal expression.
  • Develop excitement and curiosity about a variety of different artists and their styles and techniques and use these to inspire their own artwork.
  • Ensure understanding of specific vocabulary and techniques when creating and evaluation of their work.
  • To provide opportunities for children to reflect and respond to their own and others' artwork.
  • At Holmesdale we celebrate art during ‘Take One Picture’ art week, when we will focus on a famous piece of art as a school and practise one of the key art skills.
