“You aren’t going to save the world on your own. But you might inspire a generation of kids to save it for all of us. You would be amazed at what inspired children can do.”

Jane Goodall

At Holmesdale, we aim to encourage our children to be conscientious thinkers about the environment and to empower them to become responsible, caring and respectful citizens in a rapidly evolving, modern world. Children will leave Holmesdale with an understanding of how they can live and be part of a sustainable world and know that many small actions and choices can have a big impact.

At Holmesdale, we educate our children on a wide range of issues from biodiversity to how to deal with litter and waste. We follow the Eco-School programme and, where possible, environmental topics are taught in an age-appropriate way across the curriculum in topics such as science, PSHE, RE, English and reading. Our priority is to teach the children to respect and value the natural world around them and to understand how nature can benefit our health and well-being. We focus on the positive changes and choices we all can make that will have a lasting impact on the environment.

Eco at Holmesdale

Children at Holmesdale will:

  • Be taught how to reduce, reuse and recycle both at school and at home
  • Be responsible for recycling pens, paper and cardboard
  • Turn off taps, lights and boards when they are not in use
  • Take part in a bottle-lid recycling campaign
  • Investigate and appreciate the natural world around them through regular pond and woodland sessions and through PSHE initiatives where the link between nature and well-being is highlighted
  • Celebrate and learn about special days in the environmental calendar such as Earth Day
  • Take part in national events such as Big Schools Birdwatch and No Mow May
  • Take pride in their efforts to help the environment outside school by being recognised and celebrated with an eco-certificate in school assemblies
  • Read age-appropriate books about environmental issues
  • Learn how to grow their own flowers and vegetables
